Bonde Do Rolê - Funk da Esfiha
January 31, 2008

Have you seen the movie City of God? It makes Brazil seem like one scary ass place. Well this is some Brazilian music made by the nice kids that were not shown in the movie. They have mashed up some old familiar tracks with old skool hip hop beats and then added their own rap over the whole mess. You can even hear hints of baile beats but nothing dominates the mix more than just the overall fun feeling.
As you can hear, they have sampled a song from the musical “Grease”. If you know me, you may know that I hate “Grease” with passion. Growing up with a sister that was a thespian I had to see many live performances of this bullshit. Anyways this song is good enough to push the memories of local theater actor’s shit eating grins as they sang “Grease lighting!” out of my mind, and think more about a jumping party. Check out their MySpace page.

New Music Monday: Dizzie Rascal - Flex
December 14, 2007

Dizze is back with another blend of garage and his special blend of grime. This album is not out yet in the US for some reason but it should be. Each track is pretty unique, from speed garage dance to the swing out crash of the ride cymbal on the song “sirens”. Lily Allen, Alex Turner (Artic Monkeys) and UGK make notable guest appearances. I usually hate guest rappers on albums but these guys do not sound out of place and it is actually fun to hear Dizzee play off of them. I have listened to this album enough to put it into some sort of year end list. I don’t have best friends and I don’t have best albums, I like too much music and too many people… but this is good.
New Music Monday: Example - Toxic Breath ft. Britney Spears
September 25, 2007

Example is a rapper from the UK. That sounds pretty bad doesn’t it? The funny thing is that Example has made some of the best rap you have never heard. The UK has finally found its rap voice. They have stopped imitating the US and our topics and have embraced their amazing DJ and dance scene to make some bad ass beats you moron.
Example comes from The Beats label formed by Mike Skinner of The Streets and has backing tracks from his friend Rusher. If you like this check out the full album “What we Made” on itunes uk or his site. He has also remixed an amazing amount of great tracks on his “We didn’t invent the remix”.

New Music Monday: Patrick Lee
September 18, 2007
This week you get a special treat from our friend Patrick Lee, his new album “The Drake”. This guy is like the white Prince, he knows how to play everything and has been doing so since he had a pants pooping problem. You can tell from listening to a Patrick Lee album that he loves all music. The influences and styles blend into a unique sound that is timeless and his own. Piano plays along side buzzes, banjo, soft vibes and the dancing beat of the kick drum. Faint female vocals are popped in through the album and stay warm next to the tracks. This album has a strong influence from sounds heard in Patrick’s Beeb and Beauty Flash work. “The Drake” is a wonderful culmination of where Patrick’s music has been and leaves me excited for where else it will go.

New Music Monday: Gil Mantera’s Party Dream
September 12, 2007

As the name implies you are in for a party with this band. If you like Daft Punk, French dudes who only go out in public dressed like robots, you should move your ass to some Gil Mantera who go out dressed like cowboy vampire skiiers. This mid western duo from Ohio lay down some nasty keyboard and a serving of soaring butt rock guitar on each track of “Blood Songs”, their second album. The vocals range from Andrew W.K. style rock to robot tripped out speak and with a lead singer named Ultimate Donny you know you are are in for a good time!
